**Full Disclosure: I was provided with Waverly Fabric to make this post possible. No compensation was received. All opinions are my own.
A few weeks ago, I was challenged to ‘Waverize It!’ What is that you ask? It’s a project challenge using Waverly fabric.
I was told that I could do anything I wanted with the 2 yards of {surprise} Waverly fabric that I’d be receiving. When my package arrived, I was a little disappointed by the floral pattern. Don’t get me wrong, the fabric was awesome – nice quality and beautiful, rich colors! The floral print wasn’t something I’d normally pick.
Because it wasn’t a print I would have purchased, I left it bundled on my package chair waiting for inspiration to hit me. I toyed with the idea of making a tortilla warmer, {another} camera strap, a business card holder and a suit jacket. And then, with the help of my mom, an idea hit!
I decided to create a DIY Rag Rug.
Materials:
- 2 yards of fabric
- 2 sink mats (I purchased mine at a Dollar Tree)
- Scissors
- Ruler
We ripped the fabric into strips and then cut those strips into 9″ pieces. After we had a large pile, we cut about 1/2 an inch off one side of each plastic sink mat and tied them together with a piece of fabric.
After I FINALLY finished tying on the fabric pieces, my rug had a few bare spots, so I added pieces until I was satisfied with its fullness. Then, I flipped it over to see what it looked from the backside. Pretty cool, if you ask me!
It was tedious work, but I really like the way it turned out!!
I put the rag rug outside my front door last night. This morning when I stepped outside, I did a double-step! I thought someone had left a pile of candy right at my door! I really love this rug and all it’s colors!
To celebrate their 90th birthday, Waverly is hosting a Facebook contest!

?This is super cute. I am so not crafty, though, how do you “rip” it into strips
I think you could do it! You cut a little snip in the top of the fabric and then rip it down. SUPER easy. And then you just double knot it onto the mat.
This is soooo cute!
Thank you!
This rag rug turned out super cute! I keep saying that I want to make one for my house…. one day I guess.
What a fun rug! This project would be great for a kid’s room!
It turned out great!!!
I am not crafty but that is super cute!!!
Oh yay! A craft for us craft challenged individuals.
Exactly! (As much as I love crafts, they usually end in a FAIL!)
I wondered how those ladies at craftshows made them. Pretty simple. I think I could have the kids make them!
Bwahaha you thought it was candy. π
OMG! I never thought about using a plastic sink mat! You are a genius! lol Going to try to make one of these this weekend!
This is absolutely adorable! This would be perfect for my daughters room. I LOVE it!!
Cute Rug!!! π
Thanks π I might have to make one for H.
What an adorable rug! I’ve attempted to make one out of t-shirt material but I got bored and didn’t finish it. Your project makes me want to dig mine out of the closet and complete it.
FUN! You absolutely should!
That is very cool. I am still working on my project. I hope I get it done and it turns out how I envision it in my head.
I can’t wait to see it!
I LOVE THIS!! I am going to google and make one! These would be wonderful Christmas presents!! Thank you!!
P.S. I need a camera strap, just saying π Are you hire-able? LOL
I am hire-able! π Shoot me an email!
What color do you like?
Ok, that is just too fun!!!!!
so adorable!
I would have never thought to do that. I would like have made a pair of pajamas with it π
Oh, PJ’s would be AWESOME!
Awesome Rug!!
I absolutely love this. I am sure you can make these with old recycled clothes as well. May not look as cute as yours but would be eco-friendly. π
Oh absolutely! And I think it would still be cute – especially with jeans!
I can’t understand what you do with the dish mat.
Tie pieces of fabric onto the dish mat, when it’s full, it’s done.
What a fun project. I bet it makes you smile when you see it. Thanks for the post.
I love DIY’S! This would look so cute in my little girls room! Also would look great out on the patio! It looked like a little bit of work, but well worth it, looks great! Thanks for sharing!
It wasn’t too bad. I definitely recommend using a thimble, though. Oh, and unless it’s going to be hanging from the ceiling, cut the styrofoam ball in half. It looks funny against a wall because it doesn’t lay flat!
