I’m going to let you in on a little secret — it really doesn’t get very cold in South Texas. That said, buying an ugly Christmas sweater at the store isn’t an option because they are just too warm. When my son told me there would be an ugly Christmas sweater contest at the party he’d be attending, I decided I’d make one! The process was far easier than I thought it would be and the shirt turned out fantastic. James even won the grand prize (a screaming monkey) with his ‘sweater’.
How to Make an Ugly Christmas Sweater –
Supplies:
- 1 long-sleeved t-shirt or sweatshirt
- 1 package of tinsel garland
- 1 set of battery-operated lights
- Small ornaments or pom-poms
- Fabric glue and/or needle and thread
- Parchment paper
Directions:
- Lay the shirt on a flat surface.
- Tear a piece of parchment paper to fit inside the shirt. (This will keep the glue from seeping through and sealing the shirt together.)
- Make a triangle shape with the garland on the shirt. Be sure this is the size you want before you cut the garland.
- Cut and glue down.
- Fill the inside of the triangle (tree) with garland until the shirt can no longer be seen.
- The battery part of the lights will go in your jeans pocket. Allow enough extra for that.
- Glue (or whip stitch) the lights down from the bottom up.
- Add small ornaments or pom-poms.
- Allow at least 24 hours to dry before wearing.
