For the last several years I’ve had a Word of the Year. I haven’t done a heck of a lot with those words but it makes me feel better to start a new year with some motivation. Unlike resolutions, words don’t commit you to goals. I used a generator to come up with my 2020 Word of the Year but I liked the first word it gave me so I’m sticking with it!
Drum roll, please …
My 2020 Word of the Year is …
DISCERN!
The dictionary defines DISCERN this way:
discern
/dih-surn/
verb (used with object)1. to perceive by the sight or some other sense or by the intellect; see, recognize, or apprehend: They discerned a sail on the horizon.
2. to distinguish mentally; recognize as distinct or different; discriminate: He is incapable of discerning right from wrong.
verb (used without object)
1. to distinguish or discriminate.
synonyms: detect, find out, perceive, spot, differentiate, judge
I’m not sure what I’ll be discerning but, ready or not, I’m jumping in with both feet!

My word for 2020 is unapologetic. It will be a hard but healing word for me I think. Happy New Year!
