I love educational toys for my youngest, Colin! I know that my husband and I are the primary source of learning for our almost-five-year-old and I think we are well aware of everything we purposefully teach him, but educational toys can provide so many additional learning opportunities because they aren’t trying to teach. VTech’s InnoTab 3 is an great tool in aiding our efforts to educate Colin!
Colin has had the original InnoTab since September 2011 and it still gets plenty of use – he uses it at least two times a week. So when I was offered the chance to review the InnoTab 3, of course I jumped on it. I didn’t tell Colin it was coming until it arrived. We opened the box and he was ready to pull it out and put it to work! (I told him he had to wait for me to photograph it before he could use it.) After about an hour, I’d taken the pictures I wanted, installed the Learning Lodge on my computer and updated the system (I wasn’t prepared for that, but the InnoTab 3 needed it).
After I handed the learning tablet over, Colin played with it for a good hour before he was ready for a break. While he played, he told me all about everything he was doing – I think the camera was his favorite part!
What we thought:
- Right off the bat, I realized how much smaller the InnoTab 3 is (compared to the earlier versions). I really like the new size – it’s much more manageable for little hands! I do wish the screen size were a bit larger, though.
- On the top of the device, you’ll notice a camera that rotates 180° – the rotating camera is a BRILLIANT change! It’s definitely a lot easier (for kids) to operate.
- I like that the InnoTab 3 comes with batteries, but I’d rather pay a little more for the device and have a charging cord than replace the batteries every 10 days (give or take).
- To get into the battery compartment(s), there is a slide release. I really appreciate this because Colin (so far) doesn’t realize how to change the batteries.
- The directional pad (d-pad) is another great addition to the InnoTab 3! It definitely makes things less frustrating for Colin.
- The power & home buttons are smaller, in different locations on the device and aren’t as colorful as the original, but I think that gives the InnoTab a sleeker (more ‘grown-up’) look.
- The ear phone plug is on the bottom of the device. I like this because the cord isn’t as ‘in the way’ as it was when the plug was on the top (of the original).
- All in all, I would recommend the InnoTab 3!
