Taking time out away from the kids is important, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In this guide, Izzy from PassSmart looks at some top tips for taking a romantic road trip. Whether you’ve only got a few days or a week or more away, this top 5 guide will help you make the most of your precious alone time!
Try not to plan too much
One of the best things about a romantic trip away is that you can escape the routine of your daily life. You can forget about the alarm clock, getting the kids to school on time and what’s on the menu for dinner. Try not to get too bogged down with planning every aspect of your trip, and just go with the flow.
This can be tough when you’re used to planning to within an inch of your life, but when you’re not bringing the kids with you, it’s not necessary to have a full and organized itinerary prepared before you’ve even got out of the front door!
Don’t be afraid to get lost
A road trip is a fantastic opportunity to get lost. Now, you’re probably thinking ‘why the hell would I want to do that?’, but you’d be surprised at how fun getting lost can be. You don’t want to get so lost that you can’t find your way back, though, so I’d advise taking a GPS with you just to be on the safe side!
Depending on where you’re traveling to, you could find a nice scenic route to explore. This tip is ideal for road trips in the countryside, because getting lost in the middle of a bustling city might not be so relaxing!
Dress up!
You might think there’s no point in taking your fanciest clothes with you, but it can feel great to get dressed up for a special night out, especially if you don’t have many opportunities to do so at home! Find the perfect restaurant to visit, and get glammed up for the evening. You might struggle to get your partner to follow suit, but make sure he’s got something suitably smart to wear!
Relax & unwind
Don’t feel like you have to do something every day of your trip. Have a lay in and relax at your hotel if you want to. Read a book, have a long lunch and go for swim. Do all the simple things which you never get time to do at home. You’ll forget how amazing sleeping in until 9am is!
Take lots of photos!
Make sure you take your camera with you, and take lots of photos. The kids will love looking at them when you’re back, and you can show them what you’ve been up to! Make yourself a special album when you get home, which you can both look back on when you’re in your rocking chairs together!

We are so due for a romantic trip without kids, but when we do plan we never plan. We do things on spur of the moment. Lot less stressful! Great ideas here!

My parents took the kids for the last two days of Spring Break, but the hubs still had to work. We haven’t had a romantic trip since before we had kids.
