The winter months can wreak havoc on your vehicle. Between the snow, road salt, mud and cold temperatures, your car will need some TLC when the warmer weather rolls around.
Flush and refill cooling system – When the hot weather kicks in, you are going to need your car’s coolant system to be at its best. Because of this, this is the time you will want to do a cooling system flush to get rid of build up like rust and residue in the system. Then, put in fresh fluids and you are ready to go.
Replace air filter – During the winter months, the air filter in your car gets filled with debris from the road surfaces. So, this is the ideal time to put a fresh, new air filter in your car.
Check battery – Checking your car’s battery is important so you can ensure there is no build-up of sulfuric acid, since this can cause corrosion. Checking your car’s battery is as simple as driving to your nearest auto parts store. Most of them will perform a free battery check, as well as clean the cables and terminals of the battery.
Check windshield wipers – During the summer months, you are going to use your windshield wipers a lot, especially if your area gets a lot of rain. Check your wipers and if you notice the rubber is cracked, broken or split, you need to change the blades.
Perform A/C system check – You want to be sure your car’s air conditioning is working properly, since you will likely need at some point during the summer, especially the hot and humid days. You want to ensure that the unit is not leaking Freon (older vehicles), since it is harmful to the atmosphere.
Check tires – Just as the outside temperatures go up and down, the same is true for the pressure in your tires. When the temperatures rise, tire pressure rises and when temps descend, tire pressure also descends. Find out what the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) is for your tires by referencing the owner’s manual for your vehicle. Then, use a tire pressure gauge to ensure your tires are inflated to where they need to be.
