Childhood.
It’s a time in life where there should be no worries. There should be time for play. There should be toys. There should be smiles and plenty of laughter.
As a parent, we know the long road ahead will have twists and turns, even tunnels of darkness. But as a parent, we also hope and pray that those tunnels will be way down the road.
Sadly, for many we know and love, those unexpected twists can be devastating. That road – it isn’t always a long one.
- FACT: Pediatric cancer is the number one cause of death by disease in children in the United States.
Meet Declan: 10 Months Old – Childhood Cancer Patient
With it being so heartbreaking, and affecting those so young, you might think childhood cancer gets an incredible amount of funding for research.
I was SHOCKED at the percentage.
- FACT: Only 4% of Government funding supports pediatric cancer research
With approximately just four percent of the National Cancer Institute’s budget dedicated to childhood cancer, there is so much room for improvement, and as a mom I find myself hurting for those parents.
Why? It is estimated that more than 40,000 children are treated for cancer annually nationwide.
- 6 years old – Average age of child at diagnosis
- 1 in 8 – One in eight children do not survive.
Meet Becca Boo: Childhood Cancer Patient Making a Difference
She was nearly 7-years old when she first felt different. That’s the right age for the average kiddo to be diagnosed with pediatric cancer. But her symptoms, far from unusual…at least at first.
Most kids have “growing pains”. I remember my legs would hurt so badly as a child during growth spurts. For Becca, what were first thought to be “growing pains” during soccer soon turned into severe pains so bad that she couldn’t get out of bed.
Diagnosis: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
I cannot imagine the heartbreak. One day a twin and active child (swimming, soccer, and gymnastics), the next day cancer patient.
Becca’s Lesson – No Donation Too Small
Though fighting a battle big enough to scare many, Becca still focuses on helping others. A lesson we all could use.
She literally has been collecting pennies to help other children facing her same challenges.
There really is no donation too small to help.
Tackle Kids Cancer. It was created to fund pediatric cancer research and innovative patient care programs to help find a cure.
Because the pediatric cancer community is small, discoveries made by researchers with Tackle Kids Cancer dollars help children throughout the world.
Funding in all forms is crucial and with Tackle Kids Cancer, 100% of all donations benefit the essential clinical care, unique support services and groundbreaking cancer research needed to find a cure.
