Most auto body mechanics do not set out to purposely make an error when working on your car. But, just like the rest of us, they are human and they do make mistakes. With that said, there are some mistakes that mechanics make that are more common than others.
Making repairs to your car without asking you first – Here is the scenario: you hear a strange noise coming from your vehicle, so you take it in to your mechanic to have them look at it. The next thing you know, you receive a call from your mechanic telling you that your car is fixed and ready to be picked up. Fixed? Ready? But you never consented to any repairs. To prevent this, let your mechanic know you would like a phone call before any repairs are made.
Not telling you that there will be a delay in your car repairs – Mechanics are busy folks just like the rest of us. You need your car to get around, but your mechanic hasn’t called you back since you dropped your car off to him this morning. So, you can him up and he tells you that your car won’t be fixed for another 4 or 5 days because a part that is needed isn’t in stock and needs to be ordered. It certainly would have been nice of him to call you earlier to let you know so that you could make arrangements for alternate transportation.
Putting parts in your vehicle without knowing exact problem – There are times when a mechanic thinks he knows what is wrong with your car, but isn’t exactly positive of it. So, what does he do? Well, usually he will change out the part on the car that he thinks is causing the problem. However, you find that when you get your car back, the noise in the car, which is the reason you brought your car to the mechanic in the first place, is still there. It is important to make sure your mechanic performs diagnostic testing to confirm the problem, before he proceeds with any repairs.
