It’s back-to-school shopping season and while everyone tends to focus on buying new clothes, backpacks, and other school supplies for their kids, bringing along a shopping list for physical education class is just as important. P.E. clothes and gear could get pricy if you’re not careful, so this guide will help you save on everything your child needs for their P.E. class.
P.E. Clothes
Schools generally have control over P.E. clothing sales, so you don’t have much of a choice when it comes to how much you pay for the shirt and shorts combo. You could however, buy cheaper sweatpants or workout pants from Target or Walmart, rather than paying for the school’s pricy, branded sweatpants (which often aren’t explicitly required but obviously necessary for the cold winter months). Hand-me-down P.E. clothes are also an option for frugal families with older children who grew out of their P.E. uniform.
P.E. Shoes
Flip flops and regular sneakers won’t cut it in P.E. class: your child will need a good pair of running shoes. If you shop at places like Payless, Target, T.J. Maxx, or even online at Amazon, you can find a high quality pair of kids’ running shoes for under $50 or so. Just make sure the shoes fit snugly – but not too tight – and provide good traction for walking and running on any surface to prevent foot injuries during class exercises.
Locker Décor
Lockers are a thing of the past at many schools, except when it comes to P.E. Kids need a place to store their everyday clothes and belongings while they’re out exercising, so why not have some fun with the locker and personalize it? Small mirrors are very popular, as are notepads, removable stickers, and mini shelves to keep everything organized. You can find most of these items for sale at affordable prices on Amazon or in your local Target’s school supplies section.
Deodorant
Classmates’ body odor is one of the biggest complaints kids have about P.E. class and deodorant is especially important if your child has classes after P.E. class. Deodorant is a necessity when it comes to personal hygiene, so you probably want to teach your kids to put it on daily while they’re still in middle school. Deodorant is very affordable at $2-5 per stick, which should last them a whole semester’s worth of P.E. classes. For additional savings, manufacturer coupons are popular, as well as coupons available in the personal care section on SumoCoupon. Buying deodorant in bulk quantities can also boost your overall savings and your child never has to worry about running out the day before Run Day!
Perfume/Cologne/Sprays
When it comes to kids and any kind of spray: proceed with caution. Some kids think the more the spray, the better they’ll smell, but this often has an adverse effect in which their perfume or cologne is so strong that it overpowers everything else in a five-foot radius. If your child insists on wearing cologne or body spray like the sweet-smelling stuff you find at Bath & Body Works, tell them one or two sprays (max) is enough and be sure to remind them that sprays are not replacements for good ol’ deodorant.
