Minecraft is huge in my house. My kids and husband are (slightly) addicted. All they talk about over dinner is what they’re building and how to make whatever. It’s not my favorite topic but if they are happy, I am happy.
James wanted a Minecraft-themed party, which meant we had to have a Minecraft cake! But I can’t do complicated cakes, so I needed to find a way to simplify any one of those fantastic cakes I saw on Pinterest.
First I tried chocolate cake, but the cake fell apart too easily. My sister suggested Rice Krispies, but James wanted chocolate so I tried again with brownies and that worked perfectly!
Minecraft Cake
Ingredients
- 2 boxes brownie mix + everything you need to make both boxes plus 1 extra egg per box!
- 2 tubs frosting - one chocolate one vanilla
- Green gel food coloring
- Also, foil zippered baggies and a frosting knife.
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°
-
Adding 1 extra egg per package, prepare the brownie mix as directed.
-
Line two square baking dishes with foil (leaving 2 inches over the edge on two sides) and thinly coat with cooking spray.
-
Put half of the batter in each baking dish.
-
Bake for 30-40 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
-
Let cool for at least 30 minutes.
-
Using the foil 'handles' pull the cake out of the dish.
-
Remove from foil and place in freezer. (I wrapped mine in saran wrap before putting them in the freezer, but I don't know how necessary that is.)
-
Trim the edges so you have clean squares (make sure they are the same size!).
-
Putting a thick layer of frosting between the two brownie squares, stack them together.
-
Coat the bottom 2/3 of the cake with the chocolate frosting (dirt).
-
Mix the green gel coloring into the vanilla frosting.
-
Coat the top 1/3 of the cake with the green frosting (grass).
-
Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
If you are frosting the cake directly on your cake plate, take a large piece of wax paper and tear it into quarters. Cover the cake plate entirely. Put the cake on top then frost. When you're done, gently pull out each piece of the wax paper. You'll probably want to pipe frosting around the edge of the cake, but the cake plate won't be covered with icing.
Topping the Minecraft Cake with ‘grass’ is time-consuming and tedious, but so worth it in the end. James loved his cake and I had lots of compliments on it!
Don’t forget the TNT party favor boxes!

Minecraft is huge here too, we actually had a Minecraft party for my boys a little over a year ago and it was a huge hit here! Did you get photos of the rest of the party? I noticed those cute TNT boxes by the cake and I have a feeling your party was super cute!

We had the party at a bowling alley, so what you see is all the themed stuff I made. But I am going to share the TNT boxes next week!!

My boys will be having a joint birthday party in August and they have already declared that they want a Minecraft party. I am loving your cake idea and may just “borrow” it 😉

What an adorable cake. I like how simple it is but so easy to recognize it.

Midge is TOTALLY in to MineCraft now – I thought I had been spared LOL She would absolutely love this! I may have to make it for her. I admit, some of those little characters are pretty cute.
