If I could talk my husband into buying a 100+ year old home, I’d do it in a heartbeat! To say I adore the beauty and charm of historic homes is an understatement, for sure. Staying at the Laurel Ridge Inn was as close as I’ll get to possessing my own piece of history.
**Full Disclosure: My family and I were invited on an sponsored trip to Gonzales, TX. All opinions are my own.
Why You Should Stay at the Laurel Ridge Inn –
The History:
Also known as the Frank Fly House, the Inn belonged to Frank Fly (a sheriff, bank president and Justice of the Peace), his wife and their five children. Their granddaughter was born on the second floor because an ice storm kept them from going to the hospital. The family home was used for all their gatherings. At some point (probably the late 1940s?) it was sold and became a funeral home.
Location, Location, Location:
The Laurel Ridge Inn is situated beautifully at 827 Joseph Street and the town square in walking distance. However, if you plan to do some major antiquing, I’d recommend you drive the two minutes into town so you don’t have to carry your goodies back to the inn.
Hospitality:
From the moment you step foot on the property, you’ll feel like you’ve come home. You’ll find a smiling face at the check-in desk, of course. And then once you make it to your room, there will be fresh flowers, a pitcher of water with glasses and maybe even some snacks in your room.
The Inn was built in 1914 by Capp Smith. It’s a three-story brick home which contains three formal rooms on the main floor. Louise and Barbara Priesmeyer purchased the home in 1976 and have renovated it to it’s original beauty!

There’s an amazing book – ‘Grandeur of Gonzales’ – with all kinds of fun facts about the history of the town (and the homes in the town!)!!
