No one wants to be involved in an automobile accident, but unfortunately, they do occur on a daily basis. According to the National Safety Council, motor vehicle accidents claimed the lives of about 40,100 people in 2017 and seriously injured approximately 4.57 million people. If you are involved in a car accident, there are a few things you should do.
Do not leave the accident scene – Even if you don’t think there are any damages or injuries, you always want to stop and remain at the accident scene. If you leave the scene and someone was killed or injured, you could be criminally charged with a hit-and-run.
Determine the extent of injuries – Check to see if anyone needs medical attention and call for an ambulance, if necessary. You don’t want to try and move an injured person until medical help arrives. Doing so could result in further injuries.
Call the police to file a report – No matter how minor the accident may seem, you always want to call police so that a police report can be filed. A police report can help to determine who was at fault in the accident and it also provides your insurance company with an accurate, detailed accident report.
Gather information about the accident & parties involved – You’ll want to collect as much information as you can about the accident so that you can file a proper insurance claim. First, you’ll need the name, address and phone number of the other driver, along with the name and policy number of their insurance company. You’ll also need the make, model and year of the other vehicle, along with the license plate number and vehicle registration information. Lastly, you’ll need to document accident information, like the date and time of the accident, the location of the accident, the direction both vehicles were traveling and your detailed account of what happened, including weather conditions.
Contact your insurance company to file a claim – While you are still at the accident scene, contact your insurance company to open a claim. They will let you know what steps you’ll need to take next to get your claim processed.
