Road rage is all over the news far too often. I see videos of people getting out of their vehicles and fighting with each other or worse. There are a few common reasons for road rage incidents. They include: fighting over a parking spot, being cut off, not allowing another car to pass, being given the finger, getting stuck behind a slow driver or being tailgated.
I don’t think it’s that hard to contain your anger long enough to let it dissipate, though. People have been driving for 130 years. For most of that time people have dealt with their feelings of rage and hatred in a civil way.
So how does one find ways to avoid road rage?
- Start by moving over. If another car is riding your bumper, move over so they can go past you.
- Apologize with a wave to help ease tensions.
- Allow for time delays in your travel. If you aren’t in a huge hurry to get to your destination, you are less likely to get irritated with other drivers.
- If you are annoying another driver (accidently or on purpose), actively try to stop.
- Don’t use your horn unless it’s really necessary.
- Listen to music you enjoy (and that doesn’t make you angry).
- If another driver looks angry, do your best to stay away from them.
Did you know that 50% of people that encounter road rage respond in a similar manner? Also, 37% of aggressive driving incidents involve a firearm? I think those are great reasons to do your best to avoid road rage.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to avoid road rage. There’s no real reason to respond to road rage with more of the same.
