Did you know that statistics show that 90% of all automobile accidents could have been prevented with just some old fashioned common sense? Today, drivers are faced with so many distractions, which means we all must use common sense while driving.
Never use drugs or drink alcohol before driving – Yes, this may sound like a no-brainer for most of us, but it is all about common sense here. By now, everyone pretty much knows the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Don’t drive when you are overtired – When you are overtired and you get behind the wheel of your car, it is pretty close to you driving while under the influence. You don’t have a quick reaction time and it is possible you could fall asleep while driving, causing an accident and injuring yourself or someone else. If you become tired while driving, get a cup of coffee or pull over and rest for a while.
Adhere to the speed limit when driving – Yes, we all have those times when we are running late for an appointment and our foot gets a bit heavy on the gas pedal. Losing those extra few minutes because you are running late is not worth risking your life or the life of someone else. By slowing down your speeds and adhering to the posted speed limits, it will diminish your risk of getting into an accident.
Put the phone down – The #1 driving distraction these days seems to be the cell phone. Practically everyone has one and many seem to be attached to theirs 24/7. While it is dangerous to text while you are driving, talking on the phone isn’t safe either, since you are focused on the conversation and not the road.
Do wear your seat belt while driving – Seat belts are installed in vehicles for one purpose: to keep you safe when you are driving! While they may not be the most comfortable things in the world, they do save thousands of lives each year. Even if you are just going down the street to pick up a gallon of milk, wear your seat belt! You may be thankful that you did.
