Last winter my family and I took a two-week road trip to Washington state. We meticulously mapped our route and made precise lists of everything we’d need. After weeks of planning, we loaded everything in the car and headed out! About 2 hours into the drive, my kids couldn’t reach what they wanted to use or snack on. I knew there had to be a better way and decided my kids needed a Head Rest Go Bag.

How to Make a Head Rest Go Bag:
- Buy fabric in two prints/colors (1/2 yard of each should be more than enough for one go bag) and pull out your sewing machine.
- Cut one fabric to create the back of the go bag and the other fabric in two pieces to make pockets for the front. I did not take measurements, I just cut when I thought it looked good because that’s how I roll.
- Pin the pieces in place.
- Sew the pieces together.
As you can see, I didn’t sew my pieces the way I’d intended. Don’t do that! - Make a strap long enough to go around your head rest or buy a parachute clip so you can just snap it on, which is what I did.
- Sew the strap in place.
Once you’ve got your Head Rest Go Bag all sewn together, drive to Walmart and buy snacks to fill you bag with! Some of our favorite road trip snacks include SWEDISH FISH Soft & Chewy Candy, HONEY MAID Dippers Chocolate Graham Snacks, OREO Mini Cookies and Mini CHIPS AHOY! Cookies! Be on the lookout for coupon booklets at select Walmart locations. They include coupons for RITZ Cracker Sandwiches, BELVITA Sandwich Breakfast Biscuits, SWEDISH FISH Soft & Chewy Candy 1.9 lb. bags & TRIDENT Unwrapped Gum.
I may not be a great seamstress but the Head Rest Go Bag I made worked alright for our needs. If I were to make it again, I’d make it a little wider and do three pockets instead of two.
It doesn’t matter if your road trip will take an hour or 10 days, having snacks and activities your kids can reach is essential to saving your sanity, don’t you think?
