Vacation season is right around the corner! The warmer weather is upon us and people everywhere are planning their family vacations. Of course, family vacations include the family pet. If you are planning a road trip this year, there are some things you need to know before you travel with your pet.
Getting your vehicle ready for travel – You want to find a spot in your vehicle for your pet where they will be comfortable. Dogs like looking out the window, so a spot where they can do that safely is ideal. To ensure that your pet is secured in the car, be sure you have a car seat for them. Yes, they really do have car seats for pets and they are inexpensive.
Be sure you have the needed pet supplies and accessories – Before you pack everyone into the car to head out for your journey, you need to be sure that your pet has everything they will need for the trip. Most important, your pet needs to have identification tags on their collar. You will also need to have a leash, water dish, bottled water, food dish, pet food, pet snacks, pet brush, favorite blanket, favorite toys, medications they may need and poop bags.
On the road with your pet – Most pets like to ride in cars, so if they are not looking at the cool sights out of the window, they will likely be sleeping. If it is hot outside, be sure you have the car’s air conditioning is on. Also, just like we get tired of riding in the car, so do dogs, so it is important to stop every 2 hours or so and let them get out of the car, walk around and stretch.
Understand pets can get car sick too – While puppies are more apt to get car sick, it can happen to dogs of any age. In dogs, symptoms of morning sickness include fatigue, excess drooling, restlessness, whining and vomiting. Car sickness can also occur if you feed your pet while in the car. Don’t feed your dog in the car or before getting in the car.
