When you embark on a road trip, of course you want to take your pet along. However, it is important that you ensure your pet will be safe and secure in the vehicle. Here are some great tips for safe car travel with your pet.
Don’t allow them to hang out the window – While you may think that letting your dog stick their head out the window to catch the breeze is a good idea, it is absolutely not a good idea at all. There are a few things that could go wrong, including your pet falling out of the vehicle.
Don’t let them sit on your lap – This should be something that is obvious, but unfortunately, it does seem to happen quite often. Having your dog on your lap while you are driving, creates an obstacle for you. Instead, secure your pet in a travel carrier, travel crate or pet harness.
Don’t play the music too loud – Dogs are able to hear a frequency range of 67-45,000 Hz, while people can hear a frequency range of 64-23,000 Hz, making a dog’s hearing 4 times better than ours. While you may enjoy blaring the music in the car, your dog (and their ears) may not enjoy it so much.
Make sure you make frequent pit stops – While you may not have to use the restroom or you may not be thirsty at the moment, doesn’t mean the same holds true for your dog. It is important that while traveling with your dog in the car, you stop about every 2 hours so that your dog can relieve themselves and have a drink of water.
Never leave them alone in the vehicle – This may be something else that is rather obvious, it does bear repeating. You never want to leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle, no matter how long you will be gone from the vehicle and no matter what the temperature is outside.
