My kids start school in 14 days. It seems like too much and not enough time all at once. We are ready. The supplies are purchased, clothing drawers have been cleaned out and replenished with new (fitting) attire and the ‘to-do’ charts have been re-printed & hung.
During the first two months after school starts, we are all busy trying to find our new normal. It’s hardest for me because once summer hits, my exercise routine wanes because {excuse} I don’t want to wake the kids to get my workout done during the coolest part of the day. After the kids are back in school, I am figuring out how to return to my work & exercise schedules, deciding how much time I need to devote to cleaning, PTA, church commitments and everything else I have on my plate. I’m not going to lie – my plate is probably too full. But I want to share five tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle (even during the craziness of back to school)! They are going to seem simple and obvious – but they are essential for a healthy lifestyle.
5 Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle:
- Make sure you are getting enough sleep. I can function on about 5 hours of sleep, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good option. My goal is always to get about 7 hours a night.
- Find an exercise buddy! I have a friend I walk with at least once a week. We keep each other motivated and it’s fun to spend time walking and talking because it feels like we are just enjoying each other’s company. I never want to miss that time with her – which is great because I also don’t miss my exercise that day!
- Visit your doctor at least once a year. I see my doctor four times a year. (But I have thyroid issues and we are still working on figuring out how to keep it controlled.) I do recommend at least one visit a year, though. It’s good to know what’s going on with your body.
- Use Johnson & Johnson Healthy Essentials products from Walgreens to assist your healthy choices. Right now you’ll earn 2,000 Walgreens Balance Rewards points ($2 reward) when you buy any two J&J Healthy Essentials participating products from 7/26/15-8/29/15. I picked up Motrin IB, Benadryl and Band-Aids to assist my healthy choices.
5. Write down short-term & long-term goals. Goals are so important for our motivation. Currently, I have ‘schedule dentist appointment’ on my short-term goals list and ‘write a children’s book’ on my long-term goals list.
Like I said, they are obvious things. But if I don’t have things I need to do on a list, I don’t make time to do them.
My favorite Johnson & Johnson Healthy Essentials include Motrin IB, Benadryl (itch stopping cream) and Band-Aid (Blister Gel Guard). Here’s why: the Band-Aid protects my little toes or my heels – especially if I have new shoes!, the Benadryl keeps me from scratching the bites I get while walking and occasionally I get a headache after exercising and the Motrin IB knocks it out. While these products don’t make me healthy, they do help me want to make healthier choices.
In addition to having a friend to walk with, the Walgreens Balance Rewards for healthy choices™ app keeps me motivated because I earn points for logging information on my daily exercise, weight, blood pressure, etc. and then I can redeem those points for dollars off my Walgreens purchase(s) in-store and online.

We all do sports/workout in our family, so it makes me happy that we are active. Even in the winter, we just do stuff inside 🙂

My kids are not in any sports yet, but they both do scouts.

I need more sleep definitely! I would say probably eating well and being active is good for the family.

I think my exercise buddy is going to be my daughter. She does a lot more weight lifting than me but we can still work on yoga and running!
Cindy Dawkins says
I need more sleep!

Yes! Finding an exercise buddy always keeps me in check and motivated, especially on days where I have no desire to get moving!
