**Full Disclosure: This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Invisalign.
The very first time I took James to the dentist he was a little over a year old. At that visit and every one since, I’ve been told that he would need braces when he got older. Each time I hear those words, I shudder a little. How is my baby old enough for braces? Now that he is at the age that braces are definitely a reality, I’ve started to dig a little deeper.
As I research, I find plenty of conflicting information. Friends, family and coworkers all have something to say when it comes to braces. Invisalign is here to set the record straight and help us make the best decision for our families.
Three common myths about Invisalign:
- I won’t be able to tell if my child is wearing Invisalign often enough for it to be effective.
- If my child loses their aligners, it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg to replace.
- We can’t afford Invisalign.
I decided to share these three myths because they are all statements that struck a chord. James is not great about remembering to put his laundry away three minutes after I tell him, so how will he remember to wear his Invisalign? James would lose his head if it weren’t attached, how often am I going to have to pay for and replace the aligners? How are we going to pay for this?!
Three great reasons those misconceptions shouldn’t scare you off:
- Invisalign Teen aligners are made with small blue dots, officially called compliance indicators, that gradually fade as aligners are worn. It’s a quick visual check for parents and teens to confirm they wearing aligners long enough to get results. In fact, clinical data from orthodontists confirms that teens wear their aligners an average of 21 hours per day, just as recommended.
- We know kids lose things, even their aligners! That’s why you get up to six FREE replacement aligners with Invisalign Teen.
- Invisalign Teen is covered by most dental insurance policies just like traditional braces — up to 50% of the cost may be covered by insurance. For more information on cost and insurance coverage, visit the Invisalign website. Even if dental insurance doesn’t apply, many doctors will help parents find options to make straightening their child’s teeth more affordable. Many offer flexible and affordable monthly finance plans that can be as low as $99 per month.
What kinds of myths have you heard about Invisalign?
I don’t want James to be teased or feel ashamed by the fact that he has to wear braces. I like that Invisalign Teen clear aligners are removable and can straighten teeth without a mouth full of metal and all the disruption and sacrifice that comes with it. With Invisalign, teens look better and feel more confident than they ever could in traditional braces.

I think teens look cute with braces. That said, I will prob. go the invisalign route for my boys. Why? Because I just had braces as an adult and it was physically painful having the brackets rub against my lips. And the torture of having them removed, the yanking and pulling. It made my eyes twitch non stop after that ordeal. I don’t want my kids to go through that pain, when Invisalign is approximately the same cost as “traditional” brackets, with less pain and a better look.

I was lucky enough not to have braces at all. My sister did, though, and like you said, it’s PAINFUL! If we can go with Invisalign, we will!

I have heard a lot about invisalign but never tried them. My kids are going through thousands of dollars in ortho care. I should look into this!

Definitely some great reasons! I know my husband wants to really try this too.

I think Invisalign looks like a more affordable option. I am not looking to have my kids in braces too early. We actually had an orthodontist visit the Kindergarten and tell all the kids they will all need braces, everyone does. Ugh. If it is needed for more than cosmetic reasons later on, I would be happy to look into it. I agree I have similar questions and concerns.

I haven’t heard any myths, but like you, I always assumed that they were expensive. 🙂

Invisalign didn’t exist when my kids were getting braces. I’m sure they would have loved them if they did!
Cat @ TOTS says
I have always thought about these for myself and the kids are getting to the age where they will need something too. I am definitely considering it. Thanks for the awesome info!

My uncle used these and loved them!

I was self-conscious more about my crooked teeth than I was about my braces. I didn’t mind my braces much, but was BEYOND stoked to have them off when finally done 😉

I had braces as an adult and it wasn’t that bad, but I probably would have went the Invisalign route. My nieces and nephews will all have to get braces, and I’m thinking of the traditional route because I think braces look good on pre-teens/ teens, and it’s easier to maintain (I don’t think my nieces and nephew are responsible to keep up with changing trays, etc.). Maybe if they were older we’d go the Invisalign route. I might get it myself to correct the shift in my teeth from not wearing my retainers.
Paula @ Frosted Fingers says
I had braces twice and need them again, but the thought of the cuts and sores in my mouth again does not excite me.

Wow I had no idea that insurance could cover that much! And I love the steps they have taken to make parents at ease – the usage indicators and the extra sets.

Thanks for the great information! My ortho actually advised me against invisalign, I think it all really depends on your teeth

My oldest had braces but some of her teeth have slipped back. I’m not looking forward to my sons time, he’s got a lot of issues that will need to be fixed.

Wow, I love that you can get up to six replacements free! I need to keep that in mind for my dudes. In the meantime, I need Invisalign myself really bad- I’ve always wanted it but we really couldn’t afford it when I was a kid so soon I’ll be {hopefully} getting it for myself!
