The Ecology Works {#Review}

After Colin’s allergist told us that we needed to make some modifications, we did.  We bought mattress and pillow encasements for his bed, cleaned out the pantry and made it a soy-free zone.  What the allergist didn’t tell us was that those dustmites and allergens would be in the encasement and wouldn’t be released when we washed them.  The Ecology Works came to my rescue!  They sent a package of Ecology Works products for me to review.  I was most excited about the DustMite and Flea Control and the Anti-Allergen Solution.

Provided Information: “Dust mites are in the arachnid family, sort of cousins to spiders, with eight legs and no eyes.  They crawl around, eating and pooping, dying and re-populating.  They eat dead skin cells and their own poop.  Their feces and dead dust mites are the allergens that cause the problem.  Oh and I should also include that molds quickly grow where there is an accumulation of dead dust mites and feces… so even more allergens.  Although they are tiny, the allergens quickly build up and can add pounds to your mattress and box springs, their favorite place to live.  Their ideal environment would be a place that is warm, humid, with plenty of dead skin cells and where they can burrow.  Your bedding is primary.  The average bed is home to over 6 billion dust mites.  Also, your upholstery and rugs or carpet.  Dustmite and Flea Control is a powder formula that you mix with water and spray the area.  Dust mites eat the product and die.  It is a boron (mineral) based product that is safe to use around people, children, pets, etc. but it does a number on dust mites.  You strip down the beds, pillows, upholstery (everything you can) and vacuum everything thoroughly.  This will help eliminate some of the dead dust mites.  Then spray away – spray the entire mattress and box springs, all sides, underneath and the same with upholstery and rugs or carpet.  Spray until it is wet to the touch but not soaked.  It should be able to dry in about 10 or 15 minutes at the most.  This will leave behind little tiny particles of the Dustmite and Flea Control and they will continue to eat it and die for a long time.  So now you have begun the process of killing these guys but you still have dead dustmites and their fecal matter to deal with.  Anti Allergen Solution will eliminate the allergens, on contact.  You can spray the same areas you sprayed the Dustmite and Flea Control and use it at will, spraying like you would a product like an air freshener throughout your house.  When Anti Allergen Solution comes in contact with the allergen it will break it down and actually encapsulate what is left so that your histamines are not effected.  Vital Oxide is made by our sister company, Vital Solutions.  It is a hospital grade disinfectant that is colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-caustic, non-corrosive and kills a long list of very harmful bacteria, viruses and blood borne pathogens.  BUT it is safe enough to use on a food contact surface without rinsing it away as certified by the NSF.”

My (our) thoughts:

• DustMite and Flea Control – This stuff is incredibly easy to mix up and use.  There is no smell and it leaves no visible residue.  Also, you only spray a thin layer of mist on the surface, so it dries very quickly.
• Anti-Allergen Solution – This solution is pre-mixed, so it’s even easier to use than the DustMite and Flea Control.  It also has no smell, leaves no visible residue and dries very quickly.
• Anti-Allergen Laundry Detergent – The laundry detergent doesn’t smell great, but it’s not horrible either.  It smells like soap with a woodsy tone to it.  It washes well though, and it’s nice to have something that’s going to help eliminate allergens.
• Anti-Allergen Pet Shampoo – It smells SO GOOD – like apples!  The shampoo lathers really well and I could instantly see it killing fleas.  It’ll definitely be my go-to cat shampoo!  (Yep, we bathed the cats.  Nope, they didn’t like it.)
• Vital Oxide Disinfectant – Other than shaking it before I use it, I really like this cleaner!  Vital Oxide kills mold and harmful bacteria.  I love that I can use it on my counter tops without worrying about making my family sick.
• I really like and would recommend all of these products.
