As moms, we don’t set out to engage in risky driving when our kids are in the vehicle. We want to keep our kids safe in the car, but we seem to have a million things on our mind these days. This means that we don’t always drive as safely as we should. Here are some of the biggest driving mistakes that we sometimes make as moms!
Talking on your cell phone – While making or receiving calls while you are driving may seem harmless, it is actually a deadly distraction. According to the NHTSA, distracted driving claimed 3,477 lives in 2015. Even if you are using a Bluetooth device, talking on the phone in any fashion takes your focus away from the road.
Driving when you are tired – As moms, we tend to get very little sleep as it is, right? Having to drive when you’re tired is a huge risk factor. Try to avoid driving at night or after eating, when you are likely to be more drowsy. If you feel sleepy when you are driving, roll down the windows for some fresh air, turn on some dance tunes or pull over to a rest area for a power nap!
Driving too fast – Speeding is something that we all seem to do at one time or another! We are running late to a meeting or picking up our kids from day care and our foot gets a bit heavy on the gas pedal. The fact, however, is that the faster that you drive, the slower your reaction time may be if something unexpected arises.
Eating while you are driving – At times, it seems the only time we get to eat is while we are driving in the car. However, when you look down to grab that bagel or bag of chips, your eyes aren’t focused on the road in front of you, even if it is just for a split second!
Improper use of child car seats – Car seats are designed to help keep kids safe in the vehicle. However, many people don’t install or use their child seats properly. In fact, the Ad Council states that 59% of car seats are improperly used. To ensure your child’s car seat is installed properly, the NHTSA provides a list of certified technicians that can inspect the seat for you and help you with proper installation and use.
