San Antonio “Breakfast & A Book” Event Part of Cheerios® Spoonfuls of Stories® 10-Year Anniversary Celebration
WHAT: Cheerios®, through its Spoonfuls of Stories® program, has once again put six million free children’s books, including “Noodle & Lou” – a story written by local author Liz Garton Scanlon, inside specially marked cereal boxes while supplies last. To celebrate the program’s 10th anniversary and encourage parents to read with their children, Cheerios will hold special “Breakfast & A Book” events in select cities across the country, including San Antonio. During the event, which will be hosted at an area H-E-B’s in-store literacy center, Garton Scanlon will read a selection of in-pack titles, including her own. On behalf of Cheerios, she will also donate 5,000 books to a local chapter of First Book, a national nonprofit that helps ensure children from low-income families have age-appropriate books at home. The donations will support the San Antonio Food Bank – a Feeding America affiliate.
Garton Scanlon wrote “Noodle & Lou” after observing a worm in the garden one day and wondering if it realized how important it was. She says kids can relate to the story “because we all need someone to remind us that we’re special sometimes — we all have the ability to lift up a friend.”
In addition to “Noodle & Lou,” there are five other titles now appearing in Cheerios boxes, all of which have been specially printed in both English and Spanish and are appropriate for children ages three to eight. Since Spoonfuls of Stories’ inception in 2002, Cheerios has distributed more than 60 million free children’s books inside boxes and donated more than $3.8 million to First Book.
WHEN: Saturday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: H-E-B (in-store literacy center) — 6818 South Zarzamora San Antonio, TX 78211
