I have a love-hate relationship with new phones. On the one hand, I love seeing what’s new about a phone and using the awesome new features. On the other hand, customizing the phone to fit my needs and remembering how I had my old phone set up can be a pain! I’ve spent the last few weeks getting to know the Samsung Galaxy Note5 by using the device as often as I could.
I was impressed with the Samsung Galaxy Note5 right out of the package. It feels a little thicker and sturdier than my last phone. It’s no bigger than most of the phones on the market right now and fits in my hand without issue. When I type, I use one hand to hold it and the other to type just so I don’t drop it. (I’ve dropped and shattered a phone before – I don’t want to do that again!)
After I logged into my account and set things up, I went to the camera. Cameras are probably my favorite feature on phones but I was blown away by this one! The Samsung Galaxy Note5 has so many modes: pro, selective focus, panorama, video collage, live broadcast, slow motion, fast motion, virtual shot and auto. There are also modes for the rear-facing camera: selfie, wide selfie, video collage, live broadcast, virtual shot and interval shot.
My favorite is the wide selfie but you have to move very slowly otherwise you’ll look funny (note my sleeve and the fence in the photo below).
The Galaxy Note5 features a refined S Pen that makes it easy to write, capture notes or draw on the display. I can’t get enough of the S Pen! If you pop the pen out when you aren’t using your phone, it’ll show a black screen so you can write yourself a memo. When you pop the pen out to use while you are using your phone, you’ll see ‘air command’ with several options including action memo and screen write. My favorite screen is what I call the ‘doodle screen’ because I can play with the writing utensils and colors while I write.
Other fun features:
- The Samsung Galaxy Note5 boosts productivity through SideSync 4.0. This enables me to share photos and documents with most PCs and Macs with a simple drag-and-drop operation.
- The 16-megapixel rear-facing camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera can be launched from any screen by double tapping the home button.

I love this phone! It was easy to get used to, I love the size and that S pen feature is amazing on press trips.
