**Full Disclosure: I am being compensated by Filtrete Filters for my participation in the #HealthierHome campaign. All opinions are my own.
I’m not the wife mows the lawn, washes the cars or takes care of the ‘manly’ projects. (Although, I did go purchase lumber for my husband last week!) I am lucky that my husband is willing to step up and do those things because they aren’t my favorite. I do change the Filtrete air filters in our home, though. It’s really pretty easy.
Ok, so why should you change the air filters in your home?
- A dirty air filter is the number one reason for HVAC system failure. When air flow is restricted, additional strain is placed on the unit which could cause it to fail.
- One of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce your energy bill is to replace your air filter.
- Poor home air quality can aggravate allergies and asthma, particularly in children.
And how often should you change an air filter?
- Every 30-60 days.
How do you change an air filter?
- Buy new air filters.
- Turn off your air conditioner.
- Take the old air filter out of the unit.
- Insert the new filter.
- Write the month/year on the filter. (This makes it easy to know when to change it!)
- Turn the unit back on.
- Enjoy the clean air!
I am a real stickler for changing out the air filters on time every month. My youngest son, Colin, is the biggest reason I am so meticulous about making sure the filter is changed every 30 days. If I don’t change it, Colin’s nose goes CRAZY! His nose starts running, he starts sneezing and his eczema flairs. His health is important to me and that means changing the air filter is important to me.
Have you changed your air filter? How often is it replaced?

That reminds me…I need to change my air filter. I thought I was being frugal trying to stretch a few more weeks out of it, but knowing that it increases our energy bill makes me reconsider.

I surely do not change it as often as I should. I know how to but the hot water tank is right next to where the filter goes in so I kind of have to bend the filter a bit to get in because the hot water tank is too close. Marking the date is a good idea, I will have to start doing that.

We use these and love them… but I have to admit I have never written a date on them. Genius. BAHAHAAHAHA

Thanks for this easy how to change air filters. I am all about doing these things on my own. I fixed my dripping kitchen faucet and now I know how to fix faucets! And I am going to change the filter before winter on the furnace!

We have 3 long haired dogs and 4 cats so we have to replace our air filter a lot! I vacuum it once a week and usually throw it out once a month because of dander.

Ours is not replaced nearly often enough and definitely not as often as it should be. Hubby just never seems to get to it.

I stock up on Filtrene filters and try to change them every 60 days. Problem is that one of them is really hard to reach (it’s in the ceiling of the top floor of our house). I have to ask my son to help me since he’s taller.
