Did you know that 64% of kids are insufficiently hydrated when they leave for school?
Scary, right?!
Not too long ago, I shared five tips for keeping kids hydrated, and I really believe that most of those tips are key for hydration. During the summer months, my kids get plenty of water. It’s their main source of liquid hydration. But as summer (for most of the U.S.) is coming to an end and the weather starts to cool off, I think we forget that our kids still need just as much water.
As we are getting ready to head back to school, I can’t help but think that my son falls into the ‘insufficiently hydrated’ category, as he typically only has about 8oz of water on any given day before we head out the door. My goal this year, is to have him drink at least 16oz before school.
Facts about Hydration:
- Water helps your body keep your temperature normal, remove waste products, transport nutrients.
- Ever notice how lifeless a house plant looks when you forget to water it? Just a little water and it seems to perk back up. Water is just as essential for our bodies because it is in every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. That’s why getting enough water every day is important for your health.
- Drinking water is a simple way to keep well hydrated.
- Good hydration is important for the whole body to function properly.
- To help you stay properly hydrated during prolonged physical activity, make sure you drink fluid before, during and after the activity.

We drink mostly water around here and my kids are allowed to have a water bottle at their desk at school. They both are constantly refilling which makes me SO HAPPY because it’s so important.

I’ve really been trying to drink more water lately. I have a harder time when it gets cold though. Nick doesn’t get a whole lot of water. I can get him to rink some if we’re outside playing, but usually he only wants milk. :-/
