We opted to attend LEGO Kidsfest on Friday (8/31) rather than Saturday or Sunday, and boy am I glad! (Friday’s tickets didn’t sell out, so while it was PACKED, it wasn’t as packed as it would have been the rest of the weekend.)
My husband and I put the kids in the car shortly after breakfast and headed to shop at the Tanger Outlet Mall in San Marcos, TX. After spending my giftcard, we stopped for lunch and then drove up to IKEA. That didn’t take long, so we stopped at Fry’s Electronics. Then we set the GPS to take us to the Austin Convention Center. We parked about a block from the convention center (parking was only $5!!) and walked over to enjoy LEGO Kidsfest!
There wasn’t any line when we walked up to the door, so we handed our tickets over to the lady (who glanced at them and threw them in the trash can next to her) and went straight in! It was HUGE! There was SO MUCH to take in. I really wanted to start at the front and make the loop, but the kids wanted to go to the Ninjago station, so we walked to the back and started there.
Our Thoughts:
- I was annoyed that they didn’t scan or check the tickets a little more carefully.
- There were quite a few rude kids and they had rude parents. (One mother kept giving James irritated looks when he would grab a LEGO brick off the table. He had no clue she was behind him. But really, it’s for kids, lady!) I ignored the rudeness to the best of my ability and we had fun despite other people’s attitudes.
- We didn’t have to wait too long before entering the different areas. However, we could see that they were prepared for long lines at the different “exhibits.” The longest line was for the LEGO Games area. We were the only people in line, but every table was being used, so we had to wait. Ultimately, we decided to just move on.
- LEGO Kidsfest is incredible! My favorite part was the Model Museum! And in that section, Lightning McQueen was the best!
- My kids couldn’t pick a “favorite” spot, but if I had to guess, I’d say it was either the Ninjago or the Race Ramps.
- My husband’s favorite were the free play zones (his words). He had a blast building cars with the boys.
- I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to find individual Ninjagos for sale in the Market Place or the Retail Store. Colin LOVES those little things and if I could find them, he would be beside himself with excitement. He doesn’t want the sets, just the Ninjas.
- When we left the boys got a souvenir LEGO piece, which was really neat and completely unexpected!
- Wear good walking shoes. We didn’t expect we would be there as long as we were. (We got there at 4:15 and left at 7:45.) Be prepared to get your exercise!
- Be there when LEGO Kidsfest opens, and plan to be there for the entire session.
If we could have the Ninjago Models in our house, my boys would be in HEAVEN!
All in all, I’d recommend LEGO Kidsfest to anyone that loves (or has kids that love) LEGO!
Have you been to LEGO Kidsfest? Did you like it?
**Full Disclosure: We received tickets to attend LEGO Kidsfest. No other compensation was exchanged. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When Dan and I went to the Lego HQ in CT to talk to the Master Builders, they were working on that Darth Maul model in your pics!! The woman at Lego was just finishing his head while we were there! Very cool to see it out and about and that you got to see it too! 🙂
