Do you know what this Sunday is? That’s right, the BIG GAME!
We have big plans with friends but rather than making burgers and hot dogs, we are going to have appetizers for dinner. I’m excited about those snacks, but dessert is my absolute favorite part of the day! I am making OREO Cookie Balls – but not just any ordinary OREO cookie balls – mine will be football-themed.
I’m always at Walmart, so I picked up the ingredients I needed while I was there last.
When I got home, I was ready to get to work! Here’s the official OREO Cookie Ball recipe:
OFFICIAL OREO COOKIE BALL RECIPE
Ingredients
- 1 pkg 8 oz. brick cream cheese, softened
- 36 OREO Cookies finely crushed (about 3 cups)
- 4 pkg. 4 oz. each semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted
- Optional: pretzels for football helmets
- Optional: white frosting for football laces
- Optional: food gel if you want to color the coating
Instructions
-
MIX cream cheese and cookie crumbs until blended.
-
SHAPE into 48 (1-inch) balls. Freeze 10 min. Dip balls in melted chocolate; place in single layer in shallow waxed paper-lined pan.
-
CUSTOMIZE it with your own ingredient additions or decorative skills.
-
REFRIGERATE 1 hour or until firm.
-
Share and enjoy!
While the cream cheese sat in my stand mixer, I ran the OREO cookies through my food processor. When the cream cheese was soft enough, I mixed the two ingredients together. (You can use a spoon to combine them, but the mixer is so much easier.) After that was done, I used a small cookie scoop to start the balls. After each ball was scooped, I rolled them in my hands (to smooth them out) and popped a toothpick in each one and put them in the freezer.
Note: I made sure to shape the footballs before I put them in the freezer.
Now it’s time to heat the baking chocolate. I used semi-sweet chocolate for the footballs and almond bark for the rest of my OREO cookie balls.
This is where the toothpick comes in handy – simply hold onto the pick and dip each OREO cookie ball in the smooth chocolate. I put mine back in the freezer so the chocolate hardens quickly and then spin the toothpick until it comes out of the ball.
Note: If you use almond bark to make team colored balls, make sure you use food gel coloring. Regular food coloring will harden the bark and your balls will look like the green ones above!
After all the OREO cookie balls are made, place them on a green ‘field’ (fabric) and serve them to your guests. These treats will be the hit of your get together!
I really love how these football OREO cookie balls turned out – but I am going to have to make more for Sunday because the trial batch is long gone!
