One of the most annoying things to deal with when it comes to your vehicle is a car hood that just won’t open. After all, if you can’t open your car’s hood, you can’t do things like check the oil level or add windshield washer fluid. Here are some things you need to know about a stuck car hood.
How hood latches work – Before you figure out how to get your car hood unstuck, you should know how the latch mechanism on the hood works. There are two different latches that secure the hood of your car in place. The main latch is connected to the release mechanism that is located inside the driver compartment. Most of the time, you just pull the handle and the hood pops open. Once you do this, the secondary latch engages. The secondary latch is designed to ensure the car’s hood doesn’t go flying up in the air.
If the hood is jammed – There are times when the hood can just get jammed, causing it to get stuck and not open. In this case, you will the assistance of another person. One person needs to pull the hood lever, while the other person attempts to pull the hood open. If this doesn’t work, you want to push down on the hood first, and then try to pull the hood up.
If the hood has a broken lever – It could be that the lever you use to open the hood is broken. This is something that you can easily spot when you try to open the car’s hood. To repair this problem, you will need to use a pair of pliers to pull hard on the cable that connects the lever. In an ideal world, this will work and will pop the car hood.
If the hood has a broken cable – One of the more common reasons for a stuck car hood is that the cable is broken. A broken cable can be caused by wear and tear, or due to excess moisture. If this is the case with your car hood, you will need to find out where the cable has broken. If you can locate it, then use a pair of pliers to pull up on the part that is still attached to the main lock and see if it opens. If you can’t find out where the cable is broken, you may want to consider taking the car to your mechanic, since trying to repair the problem yourself may cause more damage.
