During the cold winter months, having a frozen car door is not something that is uncommon. Most of the time, the morning sun will melt away any thin layers of ice that may have formed overnight. However, when there isn’t any sun, or when the temperatures become extremely cold, thin layers of ice may form between the body of the vehicle and the vehicle’s door. When the handle and latch mechanisms of the door become frozen, you end up with a frozen car door that won’t open. Here is what you can do if you have a frozen car door.
Warm water method – For this method, you can use either warm water or hot water. Get hot water from the faucet, or even better, heat up some water in a pot on the stove. Add the water to a small bucket, and pour the water onto the layers of ice. You don’t want to just dump the bucket of water onto the ice but instead, pour it onto a steady stream.
Hair dryer method – The hair dryer method is one that works but it does have some disadvantages. One disadvantage is that electricity and water don’t make the best partners. However, using care and caution with this method can get your frozen car door open. Turn the hair dryer on the highest setting and point it towards the problem icy area.
Ice scraper method – Most people that reside in areas that have harsh winter months, usually have an ice scraper on hand at all times. Using an ice scraper, scrape off any exterior icy layers that may be present. It is important that you don’t press down too hard on the ice scraper, since this could result in damaging the vehicle’s paint job.
Chemical deicing method – Chemical deicing products that are sold in stores are especially made to get rid of icy areas. Most of the time, they are marketed as windshield deicers, but they are effective on car doors too. Just spray the deicer onto the icy area and allow to set for 5-7 minutes. This allows time for the deicer to work its magic and melt away the ice.
