It seems like the older the boys get, the busier life is. That busy feeling makes me tense because I’m not spending as much time with my husband as I’d like. Taking a weekend to reconnect is essential for us and booking a bed & breakfast near home forces us to make time for one another. We are able to have a couple of quiet meals and uninterrupted conversations. The Helotes Cafe and Stay is a bed & breakfast in Old Town Helotes, and super convenient for us so I imagine we will be staying there more often!
**Full Disclosure: My husband and I received a night at the Cafe & Stay in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own.
Helotes Cafe and Stay –
About:
The Cafe and Stay was built by Wilbert Hileman in 1912. It’s a Victorian style home with an L-shaped porch and was once the Hileman Boarding House.
A few weekends ago, we dropped the boys off with Grandma and Geezer before heading out to the Helotes Cafe and Stay., which encompasses the upper level of the Helotes Cafe and Bakery located at 14359 Riggs Rd., Helotes, TX 78023.
Once you open the door on the far right side of the building you’ll head up an enclosed staircase filled with the vintage aroma of years’ past – a smell I can’t get enough of! At the top of the stairs, open a door and enter the 107 year old home. Immediately, you’ll feel invited to walk through, see the antique touches and admire the newly remodeled space.
Upon entry, the first room to the right is the smaller of the two bedrooms. Across the hall is the living room with a small dining space and a partial kitchen & pantry. Exit the living room, into the hallway and, head to the left. You’ll see two doors on the right – the first is an adorable office space, the second is the only bathroom. Continuing down the hall, you’ll run into the sitting room which overlooks the entrance to Old Town Helotes. Off the sitting room to the right is the bigger of the two bedrooms and the only shower.
Though small, the bed and breakfast is the absolute cutest with its rustic, country farmhouse feel! As my husband and I sat in the living room after dinner, I started thinking about everything that could have happened in the space over the last 100 years. What I would give to take a time machine back to 1912 so I could experience a day or two in Old Town Helotes!
A night at the Cafe and Stay comes with a credit for breakfast so Larry and I headed down to the Cafe & Bakery for eggs and a cream puff (a MUST TRY!). The cafe has a good menu and serves a locally roasted coffee called Texas Grounds.
Whether you are local or just visiting, I highly recommend a trip to this Helotes bed and breakfast. It’s atmosphere is just what my husband and I needed to relax and reconnect!
