It seems like moms always know what they are talking about, doesn’t it?!
My mom can drive me CRAZY with her advice, but I love her and she’s taught me SO MUCH. My mom taught me, mostly through her actions, to be confident in what I do. Afterall, without confidence, where would I be? Without confidence, I wouldn’t have the passion, communication, and empowerment I have today.
It wasn’t until recently that I started to see a change in my mom’s lifestyle – but she is definitely making a change for the better! She is working out, eating healthier and only drinking water or tea (to which she says “it’s made with water, so it’s healthy!” 😉 ). It makes me happy to see her making these changes.
Now that I have my own kids, I want to lead by example in the same way my mom did! Water is my go-to drink. You will (almost) always see me carrying around an acrylic tumbler full of ice and water. I wanted to share with you Five Tips for Keeping Kids Hydrated!
1) Give them their own water bottle! Allow your kid(s) to pick their own water bottle or tumbler. They are more likely to use something they like – especially if they had a hand in picking it!
2) Add ice! My kids won’t drink water if it’s too warm. If you add ice, you eliminate any warmth! (If the ice melts, add more. Problem solved!)
3) Add a favorite fruit! Does your kiddo have a favorite fruit? If so, add it to their cup of water!
4) Only offer water! It’s simple, if you only offer water, that’s all the kids know to drink (and they probably like it!). That said, I think you have to do the “only offer water” rule right from the get-go. It can be done, but it won’t be easy!
5) Add a drink mix! There are many options out there for sugar-free drink mixes. If you have a kid that just flat out refuses to drink water, this is where I would start. BUT I would only use 1/2 of the drink mix packet and, over time, reduce the amount added to their water.

Adding fruit to water? Now that’s an awesome tip! A friend of mine places cucumber slices in hers.
Sara Phillips says
Cucumber works! You could also use lemons, limes, strawberries, blueberries and so much more!

My girls really like adding fruit and having fancy “spa water!”

Great tips Sara! I have trouble getting my kids to drink plain water so I’ll be giving your tips a shot soon. 🙂
Sara Phillips says
That seems like a lot of pressure! 😉 I hope you can get them to drink more water!

What great tips! I Pinned and Tweeted this post because I think it’s very important to share. Thankfully we are big water drinkers here, but love the tips for my friends who have issues with their kids drinking water.
Sara Phillips says
We are big water drinkers here, too! Thanks for sharing!

A drink mix works for my kids, they don’t like their water plain.

water is so great! Although, I don’t agree with tip #5. I think kids should taste water and water alone. Adding drink mixes (even sugar free) still had flavor and not to mention all the chemicals in those drink mixes. Once they get enough of those then they won’t be satisfied with water alone.
Sara Phillips says
We don’t use the mixes, so I agree with you. However, I know plenty of people who use them because their kids won’t drink “plain” water.
