My husband, Larry, is a hunter. In the off-season, he and the boys like to go to our deer lease and shoot the BB gun at all kinds of targets. I made printable targets before but when the hubs saw fluff balls on Pinterest, he thought they were a necessary addition to his supply box. Unfortunately, they lacked decent directions so I picked up the supplies and we made what we are calling Exploding BB Gun Targets!
Initially, Larry wanted to string the targets so they could be hung from a tree and he wouldn’t have to find a place to set them, but it didn’t work as well as he’d hoped. He’ll just need to make a target table for our exploding targets! Exploding BB Gun Targets aren’t too difficult to make, but it takes some practice to get them just right.
Exploding BB Gun Targets –
What You’ll Need:
- 2 boxes Corn Starch – 16 oz. each
- 1 can (cheap) Shaving Cream – about 10 oz.
- Wax Paper
- Gel food coloring, optional
Directions:
- Pour corn starch and shaving cream in a large bowl.
- Using your hands, mix until it’s all incorporated.
- If you want the exploding BB gun targets to be colored, add in a bit of gel food coloring and mix well (I suggest using gloves to mix so you don’t stain your hands).
- Get a handful of the mixture and pack it like a snowball (really tight!).
- Lay them out on a piece of wax paper.
- Let dry for at least 12 hours.
- If you need to move the targets, use incredibly gentle hands! (If you don’t, they’ll explode!)
This recipe will make about 15 exploding targets, depending on how big (or little) you make them. We store the targets in a plastic shoe box*. If they aren’t used in a timely fashion, they’ll fall apart in the box. Of course, Exploding BB Gun Targets could be used at home with Nerf guns, too.

This is such a cool idea but oh so messy! LOL I know a few kids in the neighborhood who would love this.

My kids and I were very excited about this. Yes, it is extremely messy. However, it absolutely does not work. We have the right ratio. We packed them tight. Let them dry 12 hours. Just doesn’t work. I like the idea. We are all kind of disappointed.
