Whether you are driving a small car like a Ford Fiesta, a large vehicle like a Buick LaCrosse, an older car like a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am or a newer vehicle like a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, there are some things you can do to help ensure that your car is as environmentally friendly as possible.
Keep your car in good running order – By keeping up with regular car maintenance, you can help not only reduce the amount of fuel that you use, but also help to reduce harmful emissions, like nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, from polluting the air. Checking the engine oil level and windshield washer fluid level should be done once a month, checking the battery, belts and transmission fluid level should be done every three months and windshield wiper blades and power steering fluid level should be checked every 6 months.
Be sure tires are inflated and aligned – Ensuring your car’s tires are properly inflated can help you get better fuel mileage. You should plan to check the tire’s air pressure at least once a month.
Avoid speeding and quick accelerations – Did you know that your car likely loses fuel efficiency when you drive over 50 MPH? It sure does, so plan to slow down your speeds when driving. Setting the cruise control on your car helps to ensure you maintain the same speed at all times.
Remove unneeded items from the vehicle – Carrying around extra items in your vehicle that you don’t need not only weighs down the vehicle, but also causes your car to use more fuel.
Don’t overfill the car’s gas tank – We have all done it at one point or another: we are filling up our vehicle with gasoline and because we want to get in every last drop, we don’t shut the pump off. However, did you know that topping off your car’s gas tank spews toxic vapors into the air? This is not good for the environment or your wallet.
