So, you have your hotel booked and your suitcase packing list is complete. But is your car ready to take a road trip? If you aren’t sure, you may want to find out before you leave your driveway. Here are some things you can do to ensure your car is ready to take you from point A to point B.
Check the fluids – Before you hit the road, ensure that all the fluid levels in your vehicle are where they are supposed to be. The fluid levels that need to be checked include the engine oil, coolant, also called antifreeze, brake and windshield washer fluids.
Check the tires – Tires are something that are important to check before traveling, because you certainly don’t want a flat tire while on the road. Also, poorly inflated tires provide your vehicle with poor gas mileage. Most vehicles display the PSI tag on the inner driver’s side door frame.
Check the brakes – The last thing you want to experience when traveling is problem with your vehicle’s brake system. Take your car for a drive around the block, listening for any unusual noises that may occur when you step on the brake pedal. Noises like squeaking and loud grinding, may be an indication of a problem with your brake system.
Check the battery – Be sure that your car’s battery is in tiptop shape before heading out. Ensure that the battery terminals are not heavily corroded and clean them with baking soda and water if they are.
Check the lights – When driving at night, having all the car’s lights working properly is crucial. Turn on all the lights and take a walk around the car to ensure they are all working properly.
Check the windshield wipers – Take a quick look at the windshield wiper blades to be sure the rubber on them isn’t cracked, brittle or dry. If this is the case, you will need to replace them before hitting the road.
Check the emergency roadside kit – An emergency roadside kit is something no vehicle should be without. This kit should contain items that will help you be prepared in the case of a breakdown, or some other issue with your car. Essential items that should be in the emergency roadside kit include a first aid kit, jumper cables, roadside flares, basic tool set like screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and gauges, bottled water, blanket, flashlight and cell phone charger.
