My dad nicknamed me ‘doodle’ before I could even hold a pen. As I got older, I found a love for doodling and awesome pens. Because I want to share my love with my sons’ teachers, at the start of every school year, I make a fun teacher gift. This year I decided to make a DIY Spinning Pen Display full of Pilot G2 Pens!
I went to Target to purchase all the necessary materials – the boxes, paint, cup hooks and Pilot G2 Pens which are available in 4 point sizes and 15 vibrant colors. (I already had the swivel, thumbtacks, zippered bag, dirt and plant.)
How to make a Spinning Pen Display:
- Paint the box(es).
- Attach the swivel with thumbtacks.
- Figure out where the cup hooks should go.
- Measure to ensure evenness.
- Screw the cup hooks into the pre-drilled holes. (NOTE: I pre-drilled the holes so the cup hooks wouldn’t split the wood. Also, the cup hooks are slightly longer than the wood so they will stick out into the center a bit.)
- Slide the Pilot G2 pens into the cup hooks.
- If adding a plant, line the smaller box with a zippered bag.
- Fill with dirt.
- Add the plant.
- Trim the zippered bag down so it’s barely visible.
- Place the smaller box in the pen display.
- Give to your new favorite teacher!
I thought about keeping the spinning pen display for myself but I didn’t think my son would let that happen. We took it with us to meet the teacher last week and his teacher was very excited about the gift! She mentioned that she loves succulents but that she’s not very good at keeping them alive. It was my suggestion that, if the plant died, she remove the smaller box and fill the center with extra pens and pencils.

Do you give a back to school teacher gift?
Love this!! No, we didn’t do that but we buy a gift during the school year if the teacher needs something. We bought Emmas teacher a table and chairs for play in her classroom. They have a week of, appreciate the teachers which is nice! 🙂

Soooo cute and clever! Would make a great gift, although I will have to buy some of those metallic pens for myself too.
