Over the last 10 years or so, Thanksgiving has been hosted at my parents’ house. It’s been so nice to buy the necessary ingredients for the recipes I’ll make and then prepare the dishes in Mom’s kitchen. However, earlier this year, mom started hinting at having the Thanksgiving meal at my house.
I’m ashamed to admit it, but after looking at the mess that is my house, I’m doubting my ability to get it clean enough to host Thanksgiving dinner.
But if I’m going to have a clean house in 6 weeks (or less), I need a plan! Any good plan starts with purchasing cleaning supplies, including Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning Gel and Windex® Original Glass Cleaner, from Walmart so that’s exactly what I did.
After buying the Scrubbing Bubbles® and Windex® products, I made a list of everything that needed to happen in order for my house to be in perfect, company-ready, condition.
- Clear the junk of the table and counters – the spots where everything piles
- Put all the stuff back where it belongs – toys back in the playroom, shoes in their cubbies, etc.
- Vacuum
- Throw out things that are no longer needed
- Deep clean the bathroom
- Scrub the toilets & bathtub
- Clean the mirror
- Mop the floor
- Mop the kitchen
- Dust the house (my absolute least favorite chore!)
That’s an overwhelming list, am I right?! But here’s the thing – it doesn’t have to be overwhelming when you start early.
(You’ll see that most of my focus on the initial list is on the bathroom. That’s because I have two boys and they are rather yucky when it comes to the restroom.)
Fun tip: after you scrub your toilet, use the Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning Gel. The discreet gel disc sits just under the toilet bowl rim and prevents the build-up of lime scale and toilet rings for up to 7 days.
Another fun tip: Windex® Original Glass Cleaner is a convenient way to quickly touch up windows, mirrors and much more just before company arrives.
I think if I follow my own advice and start my cleaning early (now!), I’ll be ready for Thanksgiving! I think I’ll be able to relax and enjoy the day if I’m not stressing over the last-minute things.

I host Thanksgiving every year and I am one of those people that saves all the cleaning until the night before – and then end up staying up till midnight frantically cleaning. I like your method better.

Dusting doesn’t really bother me. That’s your least favorite? Whoa! That being said, I don’t do it that much, lol.
The toilet gel really helps to keep the build-up away. I’m out of mine, so I need to get more of that! Thanks for the reminder.
Good luck getting ready!

Thankfully Thanksgiving lunch / dinner isn’t at our home. We always go to my in laws home for lunch/dinner and just take a dish to share with everyone. Great tips for cleaning to prepare!

That’s a great way to not feel overwhelmed. I host Easter my brother-in-law does Thanksgiving but the panic and all night cleaning is never fun. I will have to save this list for my turn to host.

Yes I have two boys, too and my bathroom is something else! It’s sure a good thing that my bathroom is separate – although I’m still stuck cleaning their bathrooms for guests 😉

You’re right to get ahead. I hate the rush of trying to get it all done the night before. It’s too stressful that way.

I love Scrubbing Bubbles- I need to try that gel! Thanks for the cleaning breakdown- we aren’t having Thanksgiving here, but we will have relatives in town so I’m sure they’re going to want to come over and see our total mess of a house! 🙂

That sounds like a manageable plan in 6 weeks! I like it! God knows we have tons of stuff we need to dispose of and those piles of junk… Yikes! I can’t seem to ever get rid of them . The minute I finally put everything away something else gets plopped down in the same spot…!

Vacuum, dust, mop, pick up and start baking.
