One of the first things my dad taught me was how to check the fuel mileage of my car. I’m a numbers nerd so I like to see what kind of gas mileage my vehicle is getting.
While newer cars tell you what kind of mileage you are getting, it’s probably a good idea to check in once in awhile just to make sure it’s accurate.
How do you check your fuel mileage? It’s easy!
- Refuel your vehicle (more than just a top-off)
- Reset the car’s trip meter to zero.
- Divide the trip meter miles by the gallons of gas.
- For example: 293.1 miles ÷ 8.374 gallons = 35 mpg.
It’s not necessary to check your fuel mileage every time you fill up but you should check it about once a month to get a real-world number.
If you aren’t happy with the fuel economy your car is getting, you can try a few things to make it better.
- Start by replacing the air flow sensor, oxygen sensor(s), spark plugs, air filter and tires. All of these parts can affect the gas mileage of a vehicle.
- Drive more efficiently. Rapid acceleration and braking can be bad for your fuel mileage.
- Take all the ‘extra’ stuff out of your car. Clean out your trunk & backseat of unnecessary toys. All those things add extra weight which hinders your gas mileage.
- If you still aren’t happy, you can purchase a more economical vehicle.
