Summer is just around the corner and that means that temperatures are going to rise. However, the last place you want temperatures to rise is on your vehicle. If your vehicle overheats, this means that something is wrong and needs your attention right away. Here are some of the most common reasons your car might overheat.
Coolant is too low – You will know that your car’s coolant level is too low because you will see a warning light on your dashboard that says, “maintenance needed.” Even if you don’t get a warning light, the coolant level is the first thing you want to check when your car overheats. If the coolant level is low, simply add more.
Coolant is leaking – If you have filled your coolant levels, and your car is still overheating, your coolant may be leaking. This is easy to spot since all you have to do is look underneath your vehicle. If you see a puddle of liquid on the ground, chances are you have a leak of coolant fluids.
Cooling hose is blocked – If the coolant level is fine and there is no leak, there may be an issue with the cooling hose. Things like dirt and road grime can clog the cooling hose and not allow the fluid to flow properly. If this is the case, flushing the cooling system is the best course of action.
Cooling fan isn’t working – If the cooling fan isn’t working at all, there are two reasons why: the fan is bad or the radiator switch is bad. In most vehicles, the cooling fan is located near the radiator.
Fan belt is broken – If your fan belt is not working, your car will overheat and fast. While broken fan belts are more common on older cars, they can break on any car. The good news is that fan belts are easy and inexpensive to replace.
