When driving on the highway, you pretty much just need to keep your foot on the gas and go. However, city driving is a whole different ballgame. Here are some helpful tips to navigate city driving.
Avoid the busiest times of the day– Typically, the busiest times of the day when it comes to city traffic is between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and again between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Driving in the city during these times not only delays you from getting to your destination on time, but also creates frustration and increases the risk of an accident.
Plan your route in an unfamiliar city– If you are heading into a city that you are not familiar with, use a map or GPS device to plan your route. By knowing where you are going and how you are going to get there, you can avoid things like slowing down or flipping on your turn signal at the last second.
Stay calm and avoid road rage– Driving in the city, especially larger ones, can cause stress and frustration. When this happens, road rage, also known as aggressive driving, can occur. It is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times and take your time when driving in the city.
Don’t keep switching lanes– Some drivers believe that by weaving in and out of various lanes they will reach their destination quicker. However, this is not the case at all. In fact, constantly switching lanes can increase your risk of getting into an accident.
Keep a safe distance from taxis– In larger cities, taxis are often a common obstacle for drivers. Taxi drivers will sometimes make quick swerves or sudden stops when they are picking up or dropping off customers. It is important that you leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the taxi in front of you.
Be aware of parked cars and pedestrians– Many city streets allow for vehicles to parallel park on both sides of the street. When driving on these streets, you should always use caution as cars enter and exit these parking spaces and as people enter and exit their vehicles. Also, when driving in the city, you will likely encounter an array of pedestrians. Some of these pedestrians don’t always pay attention to the walk signal at intersections, so it is important to pay special attention to this.
