You all know that San Antonio, Texas is a beautiful city but did you know it was founded in 1718? San Antonio is famous for the River Walk, The Alamo, the San Antonio Zoo, SeaWorld San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas, to name a few. However, did you know that there are some great places to visit that are within an hour’s drive of the city? Here are just a few of those places:
HAYS COUNTY
SAN MARCOS – According to Rand McNally, San Marcos is 49.8 miles/50 minutes from San Antonio.
Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos – The Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos is a cultural center that is located at 211 Lee Street. The center showcases Hispanic arts, culture, heritage, history and values. This is done through classes, events, exhibits and programs that are held at the Art Gallery, the Marcos & Fidela Garza Library and the Ofelia T. Vasquez Mexican American Culture Museum.
LBJ Museum of San Marcos – The LBJ Museum of San Marcos is located at 131 North Guadalupe Street. The museum is named after Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States. He graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College, now called Texas State University, in San Marcos. The LBJ Museum of San Marcos features an array of unique exhibits including local news clippings, old photographs, original paintings and presidential memorabilia.
BANDERA COUNTY
BANDERA – Bandera is known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World.” According to Rand McNally, Bandera is 53.5 miles/58 minutes from San Antonio.
Frontier Times Museum – The Frontier Times Museum is located at 510 13th Street. The museum showcases a 40,000-piece collection of Old West, Pioneer artifacts. There are 4 main exhibits at the museum- the Doane Western Art Gallery, the Museum of Curiosities, the Stalls of Fame, which showcases memorabilia from Bandera’s hometown rodeo stars and the Texas Heroes Hall of Honor, which was established “to recognize the contributions of remarkable individuals and wonderous characters who, through their leadership, creativity, example and hard work, keep the pioneer spirit alive and help keep Texas, Texan.”
Hill Country State Natural Area – The Hill Country State Natural Area is located at 10600 Bandera Creek Road. The natural area features over 5,000 acres of rugged canyons, scenic hills and tranquil creek bottoms. The Hill Country State Natural Area also has over 40 miles of multi-use trails, designed for backpackers, hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers. The West Verde Creek runs through the natural area, perfect for fishing and swimming.
COMAL COUNTY
NEW BRAUNFELS – According to Rand McNally, New Braunfels is 32.5 miles/35 minutes from San Antonio.
Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo – The Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo is located at 5640 Interstate 35 South. Founded in 1967 as the Snake Farm, under new ownership, it became the Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo in 2007. The fully accredited zoological park is home to over 500 different animal species, from Africa, Asia, Australia, Central America, Europe, North America and South America. Some of these animal species include the spotted hyena (Africa), the white-cheeked gibbon (Asia), the rose breasted cockatoo (Australia), the jaguar (Central America), the raven (Europe), the grey wolf (North America) and the squirrel monkey (South America).
McKenna Children’s Museum – The McKenna Children’s Museum is located at 801 West San Antonio Street. The museum provides an environment that is designed to stimulate the imagination and the minds of children. This is done through a variety of hands-on, interactive exhibits, including Wonder Shop (Art), Lend-A-Hand Ranch (Culture), Town Square (Goods & Services), Grocery Store (Healthy Eating), Kids Clinic (Medical), Aquarium (Ocean Habitat), The Great Outdoors (Outdoors), Hill Country Campground (Recreation), Amazing Airways (Science) and Destination Space (Space).
KENDALL COUNTY
BOERNE – According to Rand McNally, Boerne is 31.5 miles/33 minutes from San Antonio.
Cave Without a Name – The Cave Without a Name is located at 325 Kreutzberg Road. This limestone solutional cave, a member of the National Cave Association, was designated a National Natural Landmark in 2009. Cave Without a Name, which maintains a constant temperature of 66 degrees all the time, features 6 main rooms that contain cave drapery, flowstones, helictite, rimstone dams, soda straws, stalactites and stalagmites.
