My kids are fantastic road-trippers. If my husband and I tell them we are going for a weekend getaway, they know just what to pack and can have it done in under an hour! Usually my husband and I can give them a run for their money as far as packing quickly goes. But sometimes we aren’t as road-ready as we’d like because the getaway was a last minute decision and the car needs an oil change.
For us, making sure the car is road-ready includes ensuring your gas tank is full, getting an oil change, making sure all the fluids are topped off double-checking the tire pressure and putting all getaway essentials in the vehicle.
Pennzoil oil changes from Walmart are especially helpful before we embark on a quick getaway because we can pick up a few road trip necessities while we wait for the Automotive Care Center to complete the oil change. Doing both at once means we are on the road quicker than we would have been if we’d made two stops.
After our car is as ready for the getaway as we are, my family piles in and off we go!
It doesn’t matter where your trip is taking you – cross-country or just to the other side of town – it ‘s still important to pack all of your goodies.
I usually pack the same things for each trip. Here’s my list of
Getaway Essentials:
- Small trash can (or Walmart bag to use as a trash can)
- Snacks (crackers, cookies, non-chocolate candy, nuts, bottled water, etc.)
- Books (coloring and reading)
- Pens
- Head lamp for reading
- Earplugs
- Fully charged electronics (and their chargers!)
- Small pillows and blankets to get cozy in
- Binoculars
- Cameras
Are you road-ready for your next weekend getaway?!
From June 10th – September 9th, Pennzoil oil changes will be on Rollback at Walmart Automotive Care Center stores.
- High Mileage $35.88, compared to the regular Walmart price of $39.88. {Industry standard price is $46}
- Platinum Full Synthetic $45.88, compared to the regular Walmart price of $49.88. {Industry standard price $66}

We just got our oil changed at Walmart, too. We have a little road trip coming up this weekend, so we wanted to make sure the car is ready 🙂
Patty says
That is just so convenient. You can get your shopping done and get your car all fixed up at the same time. Win win!

I am road trip ready! Just need it to be Friday already! I definitely should check my oil before we leave.

I so wish our Walmart did oil changes! I’m already there all the time – it would be nice to be able to get my oil changed while I’m shopping!

Getaways and vacations are the time to make sure your car is in tip top shape. It is a great idea to get your oil change, have your car checked over, and shop for essentials all in one place.

I definitely have to do full checkups before the big trips. I always bring plenty of supplies too!
Karen Eidson says
We have had oil changes at Wal-Mart before. It’s so convenient to shop for groceries while we wait for the car to be ready.

With kids along for the ride, you really can’t go anywhere without snacks. Thankfully, you can pick up snacks and everything else at Walmart.

Love the file box idea – that’s great!! I’m married to a Senior Master Technician, so I go nowhere without my car checked out! 🙂

*insert LONG sigh here* The convenience of Wal-Mart is something this expat definitely appreciates now that I have to schedule my car and basically wait all day for an oil change.
It’s the price we pay for La dolce vita I guess. Plus that little get-a-way box is amaze-balls.
Marina says
My husband will be excited to hear that Walmart does this. We stay 5 minutes away from a Walmart store and this would be so convenient and I’m sure much more affordable.

Great tips. We are going on a road tip this week-end and I just had the van in the other day for a check up. The one thing I always forget is something to put trash in. I think I need to get a permanent trash can for the van.
Sara Phillips says
I have a permanent trash can for my car. It makes like so much simpler!
Yoly @ SavvyMujer says
We just need a couple of fishing rods and we’ll be ready. Car maintenance is very important to us.

I love the getaways essential box. I had something similar for my kids when they were younger and it was so convenient to have everything I thought we would need on a road trip in one place.

I love weekend getaways! We’re getting ready for vacation in a couple weeks and we are driving o a beach that’s 4 hours away, so we will definitely be following these tips!

I love the essentials box! Such a great idea. I am lucky enough that my hubby changes our oil in our cars. I never have to worry about it.

Great idea on the getaway box. I need to add binoculars to the car, my kids would love that!

What a great way to keep all of those important roadtrip items together in one place! We have a roadtrip coming up soon, and I’ll totally grab an oil change and a roadtrip box before we go. Thanks for sharing! #client

I love that you did a getaway essentials box, that is so smart. My older kids are great travelers. My almost 2 year old – not so much!
