Stonehenge II is an homage (not a replica) to the original Stonehenge monument and is located in the Texas Hill Country. It was conceived by Al Sheppard and built with the help of his friend and neighbor, Doug Hill. You’ll find it standing in the middle of 13.5 acres at the Hill Country Arts Foundation Campus.
Stonehenge II was made over 20 years ago with steel, metal lathe and plaster and then anchored with cement. It’s about 90% as wide and 60% as tall as the original Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. The project took about Sheppard and Hill about nine months to complete. Sheppard also created two 13-foot tall Easter Island head replicas. The sculptures were moved to their current location in 2012.
Location: 120 Point Theatre Rd., Ingram, TX 78025
Hours: Stonehenge II is open 7 days a week from dawn until dusk.
Cost: It’s completely free to visit but donations are graciously accepted to help maintain the area.
*Note: Watch for red ants on the grounds. They bite!!
There is no mystery or purpose behind the Texas Hill Country’s megalithic circle and its Easter Island sidekicks but it’s worth adding to your road trip list! A stop at Stonehenge II will be enjoyed by family members of all ages and won’t add too much time to whatever drive you are making.
Fun fact: Stonehenge II sits directly in the path of the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse! The duration of the eclipse will last for 4 minutes 26 seconds.
