We have all done it at one time or another: left our car keys in the car and shut the door. Having a spare key would come in handy right about now, but honestly, how many of us have one? Before you shell out money for a locksmith to come out and unlock your car door, try these things.
Make sure you are really locked out – While this may seem like common sense, the first thing most of us do when we discover we have locked our keys inside the car is panic. Just because you tried the doors and they are indeed locked, there may be another way in, the trunk. That’s right, sometimes you can get in your car through the trunk. With some cars, you can access the back seat via the trunk.
Make a slip knot – This only works with older cars that have locks that are pushed down or pulled up. You need a shoelace, which most of us have handy. Just a tie a small loop with the shoestring, lower the knot into the door, secure around the lock and pull the lock up. You may have to repeat this more than once for it to work.
Use a clothes hanger – This is probably one of the oldest and most common methods to unlock a car door. You will need a wire hanger for this to work. Untwist the wire hanger and make a hook. Slide the hook into the window’s weather stripping and when you reach the lock, unlock it. Again, this may take a couple tries to get it to work.
Call roadside assistance – If you have AAA or some other type of roadside assistance, give them a call and they will come unlock your car door for you. Most of the time, you are covered for them coming out to unlock your car door.
