You are out car shopping and you have your eyes set on a used car. However, you have heard some of the horror stories floating around about buying used cars and you want to ensure you don’t get scammed. Here are some of the most important questions to ask when you are considering a used car purchase.
How many previous car owners where there? This is an important question because if a vehicle had several owners in the past, there is likely a reason why the car had numerous owners. If there were one or two previous owners, this is what you are ultimately looking for.
Has the car been involved in any accidents? While the fact that a vehicle may have been involved in an auto accident isn’t really a huge deal, it is important to know this information since previous auto accidents may result in future problems with the vehicle.
How many miles does the car have? You want to know what the car’s odometer reads. If the odometer reading seems too high or too low for the car’s year, you may want to find out why that is. Also, as a general rule of thumb, the higher number of miles on the vehicle, the lower the price of the vehicle should be.
Are there service records for the vehicle available? Previous owners of the vehicle should have kept service records like mechanic repair receipts or warranty service records. Look to see if there was any particular maintenance that was done several times and doesn’t include typical wear and tear maintenance.
Can my personal mechanic perform an inspection? Allowing your own mechanic take a look at the vehicle before you make the purchase is extremely important. If the seller of the car will not allow your mechanic to inspect the car beforehand, this is not a seller you want to do business with. By having a mechanic look at the car, they can tell you exactly what is good about the car and what may not be so good about it.
