The weather here already has a ‘feels-like’ of over 100 degrees. If I had it my way, I’d shelter indoors until fall! Unfortunately, that’s just not an option. Rather than avoiding my vehicle for the summer months, I prepare my vehicle for the summer months by ensuring everything is as it should be so the kids and I can have fun!
But what exactly needs to be done to prepare your vehicle for the summer months? Take your car into a technician and:
- Have the air conditioning checked
- Driving around in 100+ degree temperatures is no fun if you sit in your car and sweat. Make sure the a/c is blowing cool air correctly.
- Have the cooling system flushed
- You don’t want your car to overheat and flushing the cooling system will help protect your engine from hot temperatures.
- Change the oil
- As usual, change your oil every 3,000 miles. This is no different for summer months.
- Check & replace filters and windshield wipers
- Rotate & check the tires
- If you have winter tires on your vehicle, you might want to change them to summer tires.
- Have your brakes inspected
- The hot weather can increase the wear on your brake pads and wet brakes are less responsive. You’ll want to make sure you have a professional look at both to see if you need to have them replaced.
- Make sure your emergency kit is up to date
- Double check that you have water, a flashlight with working batteries, snacks that won’t melt, etc.
The majority of the list is standard car care but setting aside a time to take care of these things makes it easier to remember.
