Keeping our children safe on the road is critical. Whether you’re buying your child’s first car seat, deciding whether to let your kids walk to school or take a bus, handing the car keys to your teenager, or wondering how safe your car is, it all matters.
Car Safety Tips:
- Running or not, you should never leave your kid(s) alone in a vehicle.
- Everyone in should buckle up every time you get in the car.
- Make sure your child’s car seat is right for their age & size and use it for every single car trip. Also, make sure the car seat is installed correctly.
- Always keep your keys in a safe place & out of reach of children.
- Teach your children that cars are not toys or playgrounds.
- Always walk around your vehicle to ensure there are no children present.
- Instruct your kid(s) to walk in front of parked cars as it is safer and they are less likely to be accidentally backed over.
- Keep kids in the back seat until at least age 12.
- Eliminate distractions for your safety as well as your children.
- Always be aware of your surroundings!
The six most common dangers around vehicles are: backover, seat belt entanglement, heatstroke, trunk entrapment, power windows and vehicle rollaway.
Backover
A back over incident typically occurs when a car coming out of a driveway or parking space backs over a child.
Seat Belt Entanglement
A child may become entangled in a seat belt if they pull the seat belt all the way out and wraps the belt around their head, neck, or waist.
Heatstroke
Children die each year from heatstroke, after entering the vehicle unnoticed or being left alone in the vehicle.
Trunk Entrapment
Children being entrapped in vehicle trunks can suffer heatstroke, asphyxiation and death. To avoid entrapment heed the following safety and prevention tips.
Power Windows
Children can hurt themselves when a window closes on their finger, wrist, or hand. Some kids have been strangled by power windows.
Vehicle Rollaway
A vehicle can rollaway when the key is left in the ignition and the driver’s foot is not on the brake.
