While I don’t have teenagers yet, it’ll be here before I’m ready. I’ve already started to think about how I’ll keep my kids safe while they are behind the wheel – especially since things have changed so much since I was a learning to drive.
Start Early: I think the biggest part of keeping teens safe behind the wheel is teaching them early. The more practice they have, the safer they’ll be.
Lead By Example: If you never buckle, odds are, your kids won’t either. If you are always on your phone, it’s likely your children will do the same. More than likely, showing your kids how to be safe in the car will lead to them replicating your choices.
Don’t Allow Passengers: Statistics show that 16 and 17-year-old driver death rates increase with each additional passenger. That’s scary! Don’t allow your teens to drive (or ride) with other teens until you are comfortable with their driving skills.
Defensive Driving: Your teens will probably take driver’s education before they get a driver’s license. Enroll them in a defensive driving class, too. Again, the more training they have, the more likely they are to become safe drivers.
No Cell Phone Zone: Make the vehicle a no cell phone zone – for drivers and passengers. Many states have banned cell phone use behind the wheel so that should make it easier for your teens to cooperate with the rule.
Choose a Safe Car: If it’s at all possible, drive a safe car with the latest safety equipment (such as anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and air bags), and one with an excellent crash safety record.
