Monday morning I kissed my husband and sent him off to work. A minute later, he was back in the house telling me there was a dead skunk in the yard. He and James went out to look at it but as soon as they did, the skunk picked his head up to look at them. They ran back inside, and the hubs went out the garage .
The skunk was still there when James and I left about an hour later. I didn’t have much time to look at it, but it looked dead to me. I snapped a quick picture and we were off to the insect expo.
James and I picked Colin up from Grandma’s on the way home. When we got back, the skunk was still in the same general spot, but he’d changed positions. The neighbors came out and told me they had called a wildlife rescue to come get the skunk.
My husband was feeling a little brave, so he put some dog food and water out. We watched as Hunk (the skunk’s nick-name because Colin says ‘hunk’ rather than ‘skunk’) sniffed his way over to the food. His eyes appeared to be swollen shut.
At one point, the neighbor’s dog (behind a fence) started barking like crazy. Hunk lifted his tail like he was going to spray, but when they took the dog inside, Hunk relaxed and put his tail down.
Wildlife rescue arrived about 4:30. The lady put on a pair of gloves, held a towel out, covered Hunk and put him in a cat carrier. She said Hunk was an old skunk. Colin cried when Hunk was loaded in the car.
It was really neat to be able to get as close as we did to the skunk. It was such a fun learning experience!
Fun Fact: It is illegal to have a pet skunk (without a permit) in Texas.

Ohh!! Did he live? Did they fix his eyes? Is he being relocated or rescue?? I LOVE animals so much. If I knew of a rescue that was descented and fixed – Yes Ma’am I’ll take em’! Skunks remind me of my ferrets -weaselish vibe going. Here is a fun fact ferrets also happen to be illegal in like 14 Texas Towns including Dallas.

They took him to the rescue location. I am not sure about his eyes, but it sounded like they would try to help them heal! I didn’t know that about ferrets – do you have to have a permit to have them?
Caden says
Well I’m glad it was a rescue! I’m
Not sure actually, In Arkansas you do not have to have a permit. We moved to Texas about a year ago. I wouldn’t get rid of my babies come hell or high water. Permit or not haha! Back to
Skunks – where do you even go to get that permit?
Sara Phillips says
I’m glad you didn’t leave them! I have NO CLUE where you’d get a skunk permit!
Nichol says
We had a skunk living under our porch one summer, awful! But that is very cool that the kids (and you) got to see him up close!
Sara Phillips says
Did yours stink? Ours didn’t have ANY smell to him.
Nichol says
Yes, he sprayed every single night. They finally found him, but man it was horrible.
Sara Phillips says
YUCK!
