**Full Disclosure: The following is part of Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores® Celebrate the Season campaign. I received a Jo-Ann gift card in exchange for this post; however, all opinions are my own.
As soon as the end of September draws near, I start pulling out my Halloween goodies. I love to decorate for the holidays and Halloween makes the start of ‘decorating season’ for me!
When Joann Fabric and Craft Stores challenged me to create #SpookySpaces, my mind started spinning. There are so many great Halloween crafts out there, but I wanted something I hadn’t seen before. Mom and I headed to Joann’s and walked around the store while we tossed ideas back and forth. We had three great ideas – a fabric mantel runner, cheesecloth ghosts, and monster-eyezed mason jars.
We ended up making all of them, but I am only going to tell you how to make the cheesecloth ghosts and the monster-eyezed mason jars. {Mom made the fabric mantel runner, so I couldn’t tell you what she did!} The Monster-eyezed Mason Jars are my favorite – I just LOVE the way they turned out!
Cheesecloth Ghosts
You’ll need:
- 1 package of cheesecloth
- 1 bottle of Stiffy Fabric Stiffener
- 1 sheet of felt or black paper (cut circles or ovals for eyes)
- wax paper
- bowl
- plastic cups
- balloons
- scissors
How-to:
- Decide how many ghosts you want. (We are going to use 3 for this how-to.)
- Lay wax paper on the table where you are going to work. (Use a cookie sheet if you’ll need to move them before they are dry.)
- Blow up and tie three balloons.
- Set three plastic cups on the wax paper & place one balloon in each cup.
- Cut six pieces of cheesecloth – you’ll need it to touch the table on either side of the balloon.
- Pour Stiffy into your bowl.
- Take one piece of cheesecloth, soak it in the Stiffy, open it up and lay it over the balloon. Smooth it out so it touches the wax paper.
- Repeat. Use two pieces of cheesecloth for each ghost.
- Let dry for at least 24 hours.
- Remove the ghost from the cup, pop the balloon and glue felt or paper eyes onto the ghost.
Monster-eyezed Mason Jars
You’ll Need:
- Mason Jars – any size, but I chose to use two different sizes
- Black acrylic paint
- Sponge Brush
- Wiggly eyes – I used the multi-size pack in neon, but ultimately, it’s your choice!
- Glue dots
- Tea-light candle (or LED tea-light)
How-to:
- Make sure your mason jars are clean & dry.
- Pour a little paint inside your mason jar and use your sponge brush to spread the paint in a thin layer. (Bonus: You don’t have to wait for the paint to dry!)
- Open your wiggly eyes and decide if you want them really close together or random.
- Stick a wiggly eye on the glue dot and then peel it off and put it on your mason jar. Do as many (or as few) as you want.
- Note: If your mason jar has raised letters, that will be the back of your monster.
