My oldest son is 11 and really doesn’t want toys for Christmas this year. Actually, his list is full of electronics with a few miscellaneous items – computer, X-BOX, gaming chair, video games, microscope, music stand and a fish tank for bugs. Let’s be honest, he doesn’t need many of those things and I’m not allowing bugs to live in my house.
Shopping has become more difficult over the last couple of years and now it feels down-right impossible.
If you don’t like what your kids have on their Christmas lists, what do you get them? How do you decide what to buy for kids that don’t want toys anymore?!
I did some crowd-sourcing friends and then searched websites for non-toy gift ideas. Using those resources, I’ve compiled a list of ‘cool’ gifts that older kids might still enjoy receiving this holiday season.
Gift Ideas for Kids Who Have Outgrown Toys:
- A watch – Tweens/teens should know what time it is without looking at a phone.
- Simon Swipe – Kids 8 and up will master this challenging game by tapping, swiping and reversing their way to victory when they repeat the pattern of lights and sounds.
- Bluetooth Speaker – Rather than listening to too-loud music through ear buds, let your kid(s) listen to their music through a bluetooth speaker.
- Backyard Ballistics – Kids 9 and older can build a wide range of projects. The tasks include math & science components and cover basic safety measures.
- Geek & Co. Science Kits – Choose from a large variety of science kits, mostly priced under $20 each.
- Kindle Fire HD8 – If your child doesn’t have a tablet, or needs a new one, the Kindle Fire HD8 is a great choice. They can enjoy more than 38 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, apps and games. It includes free unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content and photos taken with Fire devices. You can increase storage by adding a microSD card for up to 128 GB of additional space.
- 3D Printer Pen – Let your child’s imagination soar with this 3D printer pen! They can create 3D masterpieces with the filaments it comes with or you can order a refill pack.
- Fujifilm Camera – Take them back a few years with this easy-to-operate film camera! Make sure they have plenty of extra film sheets, too!
- Subscription Boxes – There are SO many choices out there but I’ve heard great things about LootCrate and Collector Corps.

I like the watch idea so much, especially since they’re so super trendy right now! A camera is great for the budding photographer too.

I love all of your ideas because I am totally in this boat. My 11 year old doesn’t want toys anymore (which makes me sad) and he’s so hard to buy for.

I love this list, thank you! My kids are very much still into toys {they are 1 & 6} BUT my niece and nephew have aged out of them and I never know what to get them!
